The job

The customer had bought a property in Burnham-on-Sea that was still running on an old gravity-fed heating and hot water system, originally supplied by a solid fuel appliance that had already been decommissioned. With a new gas main arranged for the property, they wanted a modern, reliable heating system that gave instant hot water without a separate cylinder and loft tanks. The work involved removing the hot water cylinder, the feed and expansion tanks in the loft space and the redundant solid fuel heating equipment, then converting the whole system to run from a new gas combi boiler.

What we did

We recommended a Viessmann combi boiler for this conversion. It is efficient and reliable, it removes the need for a separate hot water cylinder and cold water storage tanks, and it carries a 12 year manufacturer's warranty. We safely decommissioned and removed the old gravity-fed system before installing the new boiler, adapting the existing pipework to suit the new layout. The installation included a Viessmann Vitodens 100 combi boiler, a magnetic system filter, new condensate pipework, the flue system, heating controls and copper pipework and fittings. Once the boiler was in place we connected it to the property's heating and hot water services, then tested, commissioned and registered it with the manufacturer.

Challenges

The main challenge was carefully removing the older heating equipment from the loft space and adapting the existing pipework so that it suited a combi boiler installation. Once the old cylinder and tanks were out, the rest of the work progressed smoothly.

The result

The work took approximately three days. This home in Burnham-on-Sea now has an efficient, modern gas central heating system with instant hot water, far less to maintain than the old gravity-fed setup, and a 12 year manufacturer's warranty behind the boiler. Moving from outdated gravity-fed technology to a modern combi boiler is a real step up in both comfort and running efficiency for the property.
